Change is a natural part of growing up. This six-lesson unit helps students explore how change affects thoughts, feelings, relationships, and routines while building awareness of the strengths, supports, and coping strategies that help them navigate life's transitions. Through stories, discussion, movement, reflection, and creative activities, students learn that while they cannot control every wave that comes their way, they can discover what helps them stay connected, steady, and moving forward.

Lesson 1: Belonging

Students begin exploring the many types of changes people experience, from everyday transitions to larger life events. They identify how change can bring a mix of emotions and recognize that everyone responds differently to new experiences. Through discussion and reflection, students begin building a shared understanding that change is a normal and ongoing part of life. The lesson establishes a foundation of curiosity, compassion, and connection for the unit ahead.

Lesson 2: Coastal Brain

Students learn about the Coastal Brain and how different parts of the brain work together to help us respond to stress, uncertainty, and strong emotions. They explore the idea that feelings can rise and fall like waves and practice noticing emotional activation without judgment. Through regulation activities and discussion, students discover strategies that can help their navigator come back online during challenging moments. The lesson emphasizes that feelings are important messengers and that regulation is a skill that can be practiced.

Lesson 3: Anchors Through Change

Students identify activities, places, and routines that help them feel calm, connected, and balanced when life feels uncertain. They explore personal coping tools and begin recognizing patterns in what helps them recover from difficult experiences. Students practice reflecting on their own needs and learn that seeking comfort and support is a healthy response to change. The lesson reinforces the importance of caring for both the mind and body.

Lesson 4: People, Places, and Supports that Steady Us

Students deepen their understanding of support by exploring the people, communities, traditions, and spaces that help them feel safe, encouraged, and understood. They consider the qualities that make relationships supportive and identify trusted individuals they can turn to during times of change. Through conversation and reflection, students recognize that they do not have to navigate challenges alone. The lesson highlights the role of connection, belonging, and community in promoting resilience.

Lesson 5: Paddles for Your Journey

Students reflect on the strengths, skills, and supports they already carry with them and create a personalized paddle to represent the tools they can use when navigating life's changing waters. They identify personal qualities, trusted relationships, calming activities, and sources of hope that can help them move through uncertainty. Using the Pacific Northwest paddling metaphor, students recognize that while they cannot always control the tides, they can choose what they bring along for the journey. The lesson encourages self-awareness, confidence, and help-seeking.

Lesson 6: Celebrating the Journey Ahead

Students celebrate their growth and reflect on what they have learned about themselves throughout the Navigating Change unit. They revisit the Coastal Brain, their paddles, and the people who travel in their canoe. Through activities such as writing letters to their future selves and identifying the stars that guide them, students recognize that life is a constant ocean—sometimes calm, sometimes choppy, and sometimes stormy. The lesson closes with the message that while unexpected waves will continue to come, they already have strengths, supports, and tools that can help them stay steady and keep paddling forward.
